Now walking the Camino!!

Yesterday and today on the Camino….new as well as repeated delight…communal meals including with a Palestian theologian, pre-dawn starts with long shadows, vineyards laden with grapes, wheat fields with stubble after harvest but a few stalks remaining, plants with snails attached, a friendly Spanish nun offering directions to Jane, a beautiful beyond description church, a blacksmith’s exquisite creations….we are so thankful!

An easier day of 14 miles of the Camino…lots of arches leading into and out of towns, meeting and re-meeting friendly people, vineyards and olive groves,even walked on an old Roman road…if only those stones could talk about previous sojourners. Thanks to those walking with us in spirit!!

Almost 18 miles yesterday….a beautiful walk near wind turbines and rocky fields. Today will be ‘only’ 22 km (13 miles)

Sep 8. Several more days of walking the Camino. This morning we started well before sunrise, crossed many bridges and arrived by mid-day at Pamplona. The famed Running of the Bulls in this city took place in July, but still we find this beautiful city a treat! Especially the festival parade with big heads and tall figures. Tomorrow will be another LONG day of over 16 miles… at least the changes in elevation will not be as brutal as the hike over the Pyrenees.

First three days of hiking on the Camino went well. Meeting lots of fellow pilgrims, enjoying local food and beautiful scenery. Hiking over the Pyrenees from France into Spain was a challenge- we are thankful for our health, for the training that we did in Colorado, and to have our son, Ben, with us along this stage of the trek.

In Saint Jean Pied-de-Port, France. Registered for the Camino, and tomorrow (Friday 4 Sep) Jane and I will start walking the first of our 500 miles (800 km). We will cross into Spain on Saturday.

We are in Brisbane, Australia with Carly and her husband, Brodie. This was after moving off the campus of Africa University at the end of June, then spending a few months in UK, Europe, and Zimbabwe (where Ben joined us). We flew with our suitcases to Boulder Colorado in November to be near Pule and Christine and Michael, and will return to Boulder in March.
